How to memorize French vocabulary effectively?

Published by Manon ·

Today I'm going to show you how I'm going to revise this point. You can use it as inspiration for learning French.

To review basic vocabulary in French, I will use the visual learning method.

I love this method, I find it very effective for retaining vocabulary, but especially for awakening vocabulary that has been dormant in our brains.

The "visual learning" method involves looking at images or videos to understand and retain words and phrases more easily.

Passe à la pratique

Le vocabulaire s’ancre mieux quand tu l’utilises.

Pratique le français dans de vrais contextes pour que les bons mots viennent naturellement.

Commencer à pratiquer

For example, instead of simply reading the translation of the word "chat" (gato in Spanish), you look at an image of a cat with the word "gato" written underneath.

This helps your brain associate the word with the image, making learning more concrete and more easily memorable. This method creates strong visual associations, thus facilitating long-term retention. Flashcards are a great example of visual learning.

I particularly like the visual learning videos from the Spanish After Hours channel.

They allow you to learn and memorize vocabulary simply and in context. The videos offer scenarios from daily life where the vocabulary is used, which helps to understand not only the word but also its practical usage.

I don't just watch the video. I repeat the words and phrases I hear to better memorize them and to pronounce them correctly. It’s important not to be passive in your learning; you need to be active, especially in speaking. Active engagement, such as oral repetition, strengthens neural connections, making the words easier to recall.

I recently started offering visual learning videos in French. These videos cover various everyday topics and are designed to be interactive, encouraging learners to repeat after me.

Apprendre des mots, c’est une chose. Les utiliser naturellement, c’en est une autre.

Nos étudiants pratiquent chaque semaine pour que leur vocabulaire devienne actif et utile.

To take visual learning a step further, I will create Flashcards with the vocabulary I just learned.

I use Quizlet to create my cards; it’s a great tool that I also use extensively in my program la Frenchothèque.

My students can retain the vocabulary they learn with this app and do multiple exercises to memorize vocabulary for the long term. Quizlet offers interactive features like games and tests, making review fun and motivating.

I can access these flashcards on both my phone and my computer. And I can review them whenever I have a spare moment, in a waiting room or on the bus, for example. The flexibility of using Quizlet allows for regular and spontaneous revision, essential for achieving lasting mastery of vocabulary.
