What is the difference between "un an" and "une année"?

What does "un an" mean?

“Un an” is a unit of time. One year is equivalent to 365 days (or 366 if it's a leap year).
 

We use “an” to talk about:

• age:

J’ai 27 ans.

Mon chat a 8 ans.

Mon père a 60 ans.

We use “an” to talk about:

• the duration of an activity or event:

La seconde guerre mondiale a duré 6 ans.

Je vis en France depuis 3 ans.

💡The trick is that we usually use “an” with numbers or figures:

27 ans

8 ans

60 ans

6 ans

3 ans

etc

What does "une année" mean?

“Une année” is a duration from January 1st to December 31st.
 

“Année” is used to designate a period that has specific characteristics.
 

For example, we can talk about l'année scolaire, the school year, which starts in September and ends in June.
 

When we say "Bonne année !," we wish for a good year from January 1st to December 31st, that the year goes well from beginning to end.
 

The trick is that we usually use “année” with adjectives:

What is the difference between “an” and “année”?

Are “an” and “année” interchangeable?

What I just told you works 90% of the time. BUT, sometimes “an” and “année” are interchangeable with the following words:
 

L’an prochain / L’année prochaine or L’an dernier / L’année dernière:

They have the same meaning. You can use both, even if “l’année prochaine” and “L’année dernière” are more commonly used.

Quatre ans / Quatre années:

Sometimes we can use a number with "année" (year):
 

I spent four years in Mexico.

I spent four "années" in Mexico.
 

No difference in meaning, although "quatre années" emphasizes the duration more.

Le Nouvel An / La nouvelle année :

“Le Nouvel An” refers to January 1st. We celebrate New Year's Eve on December 31st and New Year's Day on January 1st.
 

"La nouvelle année" is the new year that starts from January 1st. The new year is 2023, for example.
