Don't confuse anymore: "une part" or "une partie" ?

Une part

The word “part” comes from the word “partager” (=share). Une part, it's the result of a sharing, of a distribution.
 

The word "a share" is used when referring to something that is shared or distributed.

J'ai acheté une part de gâteau pour mon goûter. (= I bought a piece of cake for my snack.)
 

We have a whole cake that we are going to share, distribute in several "parts". Une part de gâteau (a piece of cake) is the sharing of a whole cake.

Inheritance is a sum of money distributed to the family of a deceased person. The family members will then receive a share of the inheritance.

Une partie

“Une partie” means a portion, a piece of something larger, of a whole.
 

“Une partie” is not the result of a direct sharing of something. It refers to a separate, smaller place of something larger.

Une partie de la ville est en travaux en ce moment. (= Part of the city is currently under construction.)
 

The city is a whole, a large whole. There is a part of this city that will be under construction. A part of the city will be under construction.
 

This part of the city is not shared or distributed. This part of the city is separate from the whole city.
 

Une partie de l'équipe a décidé de faire une pause pendant la réunion. (= A part of the team decided to take a break during the meeting.)
 

We have a team of 20 people. 8 of these people decided to take a break. You could say that part of the team decided to take a break.
 

"Une partie" is vague, it's not precise. But, we know that of the entire team, several people decided to take a break.
