You watch French videos, understand podcasts and know grammar rules. Yet when a colleague asks about your weekend, you are still preparing your answer when the conversation moves on.

To improve spoken French, create opportunities to respond—not only to listen. The best approach depends on your level and circumstances. A practical routine combines three steps: prepare useful language, speak with someone and revisit what you needed during the exchange.

Understanding and responding are different kinds of practice

Passe à la pratique

Les conseils aident. Une vraie méthode donne des résultats.

Construis une habitude orale avec de la structure, de la flexibilité et de la vraie pratique chaque semaine.

Commencer à pratiquer

Listening builds vocabulary and helps you recognise sounds. Reading reveals useful structures. Both matter, but they do not always require you to build an answer while another person is waiting for it.

Conversation means choosing an idea, finding words and adapting to a reaction. To feel more comfortable doing that, practise that situation. You do not need to abandon grammar: connect it to something you want to say.

A three-step routine for speaking practice

1. Prepare a situation, not an entire vocabulary list

Choose a practical goal: tell a story, ask for information or explain an opinion. Listen to or read a short resource and keep three useful expressions. Prepare one question to ask. You do not need a script for the whole conversation.

2. Speak with someone who gives you room to answer

Try to communicate a complete idea. If a word is missing, describe it or ask for help: “Comment on dit… ?”, “Je veux dire que…”. A patient partner or teacher can help you continue without finishing every sentence for you.

3. Use a correction in a new sentence

Afterwards, choose one or two corrections. Use them in a personal sentence and return to them in another conversation. The goal is not to collect notes but to create another opportunity to use the language.

Which practice format should you choose?

A language exchange can suit independent learners who find a reliable partner. Agree on a topic and share the time between your languages. Possible limitations include cancellations, mismatched levels and little teaching feedback.

Individual lessons allow focused work on specific needs. Small groups bring different perspectives and make you react to other speakers. Look at your actual speaking time, the level match and the teacher’s feedback, rather than choosing by the format’s name alone.

The School: prepare, speak and review in one place

Ohlala French School connects these activities. Speaking practice starts with Coffee Chats: 8 conversation sessions offered each week, with one or two partners at your level and a native teacher. You receive notes and corrections after the conversations.

A theme and preparation resources help you arrive with something to say. The A2–C1 library then helps you revisit the language: more than 250 lessons, 100 downloadable PDFs and 1,600 vocabulary exercises, plus pronunciation practice. These sessions are opportunities on the schedule: choose those you can realistically attend.

Small-group conversation classes are a separate offer. They provide one hour of conversation per week for A2–C1 learners with a certified native teacher. Before class, explore a resource and questions; during class, discuss the topic; afterwards, review the teacher’s notes and corrections.

This can suit you if you want a regular weekly appointment. Check the available times, places and terms for this offer. It is not the same plan as the School’s Coffee Chats.

A routine you can adapt to your week

  • Before the conversation: explore the theme, note three expressions and prepare one question.
  • During it: explain an idea, ask your question and try a follow-up question.
  • Afterwards: review the notes and use a correction in a fresh sentence.
  • Between conversations: listen to a short dialogue and use a useful expression aloud.

Start with something that fits your life. In a busy week, simplify your preparation rather than waiting for the perfect time to start again.

Mistakes that make practice less useful

Waiting until you make no mistakes, always choosing overly difficult topics or memorising complete scripts can reduce opportunities for spontaneous responses. Speaking without revisiting any feedback can also leave recurring difficulties unaddressed.

Look for practical changes: can you explain an idea for longer, ask a follow-up question or repair a sentence after feedback? Those observations are more useful than a promise of fluency in a fixed number of days.

Independent preparation can help too

Prefer to prepare useful phrases at your own pace? My Objectif : Parler Français books combine realistic dialogues, native-speaker audio, vocabulary and exercises with answers, from A2 to C1. They complement conversation rather than replacing interaction with another person.

The best approach is one you can put into practice

There is no identical shortcut for everyone. To turn understanding into responses, choose a setting where you speak, make mistakes and know what to work on next. Explore the School for guided conversations alongside learning resources, or conversation classes for a weekly appointment.
