Reading time: 8 minutes

🇫🇷 In short : “C’est bon” or “c’est bien”? “Je vais bon” or “je vais bien”? Here is the difference between bon and bien, with fixed expressions you need to know.

This difficulty is very common among French learners because the rule seems simple at first… then exceptions and natural usage appear in conversations.

📚 Need to practise grammar in context?

In the books Objectif : Parler Français, grammar is not presented as an isolated rule. It is linked to a real communication situation, with dialogues, audio, shadowing and speaking practice.

The basic difference

In general, bon is an adjective. It goes with a noun: un bon film, une bonne idée, un bon restaurant.

Bien is often an adverb. It goes with a verb: je vais bien, elle parle bien français.

Word Role Example
bon / bonne adjective C’est un bon livre.
bien adverb Tu parles bien français.

C’est bon

C’est bon can mean that something tastes good, that something is okay, or that it is done.

  • Ce gâteau est bon.
  • C’est bon pour moi, merci.
  • C’est bon, j’ai fini.

C’est bien

C’est bien often gives a positive, moral or general evaluation.

  • C’est bien de pratiquer tous les jours.
  • Ton idée est bien.
  • Ce film est bien, mais un peu long.

Fixed expressions

  • Je vais bien.
  • Très bien, merci.
  • Bon courage !
  • Bonne journée !
  • C’est une bonne idée.
  • Bien sûr.

Key takeaway

The right question is not only: “What is the rule?” The right question is: “In what situation do I want to use this sentence?” This is how grammar becomes useful for speaking.
