The conditional present in French

Expressing Hypotheses in French: The Present Conditional :

Let's look at this sentence

“Si j’étais un animal, je serais un chien”

To formulate a hypothesis about the present,

             → we need, first, the conjunction of subordination : "Si"

             → following a verb conjugated to l’imparfait.

             → and lately a verb conjugated to the conditionnel

The formation of the conditional :

*We take the infinitive of the verb (marcher, tomber, finir, etc). We add the following endings.

For verbs in -r the base is taken in -r.
Example: prendre --> prendr-
vendre --> vendr-

Être : ser-                          Devoir : devr-                Venir : viendr-           Voir : verr-  

Faire : fer-                         Savoir : saur-                  Vouloir : voudr-

Pouvoir : pourr-              Avoir : aur-                      Aller : ir-

The present conditional is used to :

Expressing a hypothesis: We make a hypothesis about the present when we imagine something that does not exist.
Hypothesis : Si + imparfait > Conséquence : conditionnel présent
For example : Si j’étais une fleur, je serais un tournesol. (I am not a flower and I never will be.)

Express a desire, a wish : Je voudrais maigrir plus.

Be more polite : Pourriez-vous fermer la porte, s’il vous plaît ?

Giving advice : À ta place, j’irais chez le médecin.
